Early Action decision season is one of the most anticipated times for Georgia students, especially with two powerhouse institutions—Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia—releasing results within days of each other. Alongside the excitement of acceptances comes another common outcome: deferral. Many families are unsure what a deferral really means or how to interpret this early-round data. This overview will help clarify both.
What a Deferral Actually Means
A deferral is not a rejection. Instead, it means the admissions committee is holding your application for further review during the Regular Decision round. In other words, they’re saying: “We see potential. We need more information.” Colleges defer strong applicants for several reasons: they want mid-year grades, they want to re-evaluate the context of the full applicant pool, or they want a clearer picture of a student’s academic and extracurricular momentum. A deferral keeps a student very much in play.
Early Action in Georgia: What This Year’s Numbers Tell Us
Both Georgia Tech and UGA saw another highly competitive Early Action season. For families trying to understand the landscape, the numbers offer a helpful perspective.
Georgia Tech Early Action 1 (for Georgia Students)
8,700 EA1 applications
2,640 admitted
30% admit rate
Students admitted came from 115 Georgia counties and 391 high schools
15% of admitted students are from rural Georgia
15% attend a Title I school
14% are first-generation students
Intended areas of study among admits:
Engineering – 35%
Sciences – 32%
Computing – 8%
Business – 9%
Liberal Arts – 11%
Design – 5%
These numbers capture one truth: Georgia Tech remains academically intense and continues to draw extraordinary interest from Georgia students. Additionally, it reflects the university’s commitment to assembling a class of students with diverse strengths, backgrounds, and experiences.
University of Georgia Early Action (Georgia Residents)
UGA continues to attract the most significant application volume in its history. The academic ranges remain extremely strong, with a notable increase in both rigor and test scores among admitted students.
13,530+ Georgia EA applicants
6,100 admitted
Representation from 129 Georgia counties and 412 high schools
Academic middle 50% of admitted students:
Core GPA: 4.19–4.45
AP/IB/DE Courses: 10–16
ACT: 31–35
SAT: 1370–1500
Total Early Action applications (in-state + out-of-state): 34,280+ (and with UGA winning another SEC Championship - the applicant pool will keep growing next year!!)
What These Numbers Mean for Georgia Students
For many students—especially those deferred—the competitiveness of the applicant pool helps explain the outcome. Both universities saw:
Record or near-record application numbers
Increasing academic rigor
Growing statewide participation
Continued interest in STEM-related majors
So What Should Deferred Students Do Now?
A deferral does not mean a student was “missing” something. It often reflects the simple reality that the volume of qualified applicants far exceeds the number of Early Action seats available. In addition, deferral is not a reflection of a student’s worth or their future potential. It’s a timing decision in an increasingly competitive admissions landscape. Applicants who received a deferral should do the following:
Stay academically strong through senior year
Make thoughtful updates when colleges allow them
Continue their current commitments with consistency
Maintain perspective—many deferred students are later admitted
Every year, many Georgia students are admitted to UGA or Georgia Tech in Regular Decision after being deferred. If your student was deferred, remember that they are still in the running. Their story is still unfolding.
