TBT: Celebrating Success & Relationships

As an educational consultant, I've learned that relationships are the foundation of any student's success. It's not just about guiding students through college applications or advising them on career paths—it's about creating a safe space where they feel seen, heard, and empowered to pursue their dreams.

Recently, I received an email that perfectly captures why this work is so meaningful and why I am thankful for the opportunity to help others, especially Ava, whom I met in 2018 and supported through her college search and application process. Six years later, I still receive messages from her highlighting her success and future. I can't think of anything better than sharing her message on Throwback Thursday before Thanksgiving!

"I couldn't have done it without you, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the School of Environmental Science AND from the School of Nonprofit Management. I love Eugene so much I have decided to stay an extra year, continue my job working in a cephalopod lab, and get my teacher training certification in Yoga before I go off to Ecuador to study migratory patterns of sharks with the Charles Darwin Foundation." ~Ava W. Class of 2024

Reading this email filled me with pride, not just because of Ava's' remarkable accomplishments but also because I had the opportunity to be part of her journey, even four years later!

As a practitioner, I am committed to creating a safe space for growth, supporting students in building confidence, and encouraging success through personalized guidance. Often, this creates a relationship where students update me on their success and career journeys. My counseling background, strong desire to help others, and wealth of educational knowledge empower students.

Over the past 20 years, I have developed a program centered around four key pillars:

  • Creating a Safe Space for Growth

The first step in guiding students is making sure they feel safe. Students are more likely to take risks, ask questions, and pursue passions when they know they are supported. My goal is to be a reliable presence, offering a listening ear without judgment and providing guidance tailored to each student's unique personality and aspirations.

When students feel comfortable sharing their worries, fears, and dreams, they can grow better. This is why I prioritize trust, empathy, and open communication in all my interactions.

  • Building Confidence Through Support and Encouragement

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is watching students transform from uncertain individuals into confident young adults. I believe confidence is built step by step—celebrating small victories, providing constructive feedback, and encouraging perseverance even when things get challenging. I strive to empower students to make informed decisions about their futures. This involves exploring their interests, strengths, and values and connecting them with resources and opportunities that align with their identity. Whether it's finding the perfect college, identifying scholarship opportunities, or discovering unique experiences like studying cephalopods or training in Yoga, I help students visualize their potential and take the steps necessary to reach it.

  • Encouraging Success Through Personalized Guidance

No two students are alike, so a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work in my field. My role is to tailor my guidance to fit each student's goals, learning styles, and aspirations. This personalization helps students feel valued and understood, leading to better outcomes. By offering customized advice and a deep understanding of each student's journey, I create an environment where they feel capable of achieving remarkable things—like graduating Summa Cum Laude or pursuing passions as diverse as marine biology and yoga instruction.

  • Celebrating Achievements and Continuing the Journey

Success isn't just about reaching a milestone—it's about the journey and the growth that happens along the way. I prioritize celebrating my students' achievements, big and small, and staying connected with them even after they move on to new adventures. It's always a joy to hear about their latest endeavors and see how they've grown into confident, capable individuals ready to make a difference in the world.

A Partnership for Lifelong Learning

The email I received is a beautiful reminder that the relationships I build with my students go far beyond a single goal. They are partnerships for lifelong learning where students feel safe, supported, and encouraged to explore the possibilities ahead of them. It's not just about getting into the right school—it's about helping them find their path, wherever that may lead.

To my students, past and present, Thank you for allowing me to be part of your story. You are the reason I love what I do, and I am here to support you every step of the way. And to Ava, Go Ducks, and here's to all the adventures ahead!
