Check Your Work - Always

Wendy Williams

For all high school rising seniors, the next two weeks hold great significance as the Common Application will transition from the 2024 Admissions cycle to the 2025 season.

When Will the Common App Refresh Its System?

Mark your calendars:

  • The first-year application closes at 5 pm ET on July 28, 2024.

  • The transfer application closes at 5 pm ET on July 29, 2024.

Over the next two weeks, Williams Educational will focus on the crucial tasks that all future seniors must complete to remain competitive. Having already provided reminders about the application rollover date, it is now important to prompt all students to review their work!

It is crucial that you and your parents review the updated application to verify the sections you filled out if you submitted your application prior to the beginning of the season. Oftentimes, students rush through the easy sections and miss important details. Common errors we come across include misspelled street names, unfamiliar abbreviations for high school courses, incorrect phone numbers, mixing up siblings' names with yours, and so on. Please be cautious and double-check these entries!

Williams Educational frequently receives inquiries about the Language section. Many students have studied Spanish, French, German, or another language for 4 to 6 years. It is not necessary for students to be fluent in a language or be native speakers to list it in the Language section of their application. While admissions officers will likely gather more information about your language proficiency from your transcript, this section offers you a chance to showcase your interest and ability in cultural experiences.

Many students frequently ask about the Community-Based Organization query, especially those who have not been supported by entities like Possee Foundation and Quest Bridge. It's crucial to note that this question doesn't apply to families receiving help from an Independent Educational Consultant or High School Counselor. Please be careful and choose 'yes' only if you have been assisted by organizations that specifically help students, such as first-generation students, without any cost or link lower-income families with colleges nationwide.

One common concern often revolves around inquiries regarding one's prospective career. Being a high school junior, predicting what lies ahead can be challenging. However, by reframing the query to focus more on current interests and aspirations, candidates can provide deeper insights into their motivation for applying to a school. Williams Educational encourages applicants to avoid selecting "Undecided" as their response to this question, as it may suggest a lack of foresight, potentially leading admissions officers to believe insufficient consideration has been given to future plans. If you haven't undergone any assessments to evaluate your personality traits, weaknesses, or career inclinations, reach out to Williams Educational. As Certified Myers-Briggs Practitioners, we are equipped to guide students in selecting a major that aligns with their interests and abilities. It's important to note that your response is not binding, so there's no need to fret about making a lifelong commitment!

Recognizing that numerous students require assistance and guidance with their application, we acknowledge that we may not be able to assist every student. However, we trust that this series will aid in highlighting crucial aspects to consider in your application. Various other sections such as the Activities section, Honors section, etc., are also important to ponder, and we intend to delve into these categories in the future. For now, our main emphasis is for students to remember to review their work!
