100 Days, 10 Lessons: What This Year Has Taught Me as a Consultant

We’re 100 days into the year, and as I’ve sat across from students and families—on Zoom calls, in meetings, in moments of celebration and stress—I’ve found myself reflecting.

After 20+ years in this work, I can honestly say… every year teaches me something new.

Here are 10 lessons that have stood out so far in 2026:

1. AI is not going away—but neither am I.

Students have more tools than ever, but what they need most is guidance, perspective, and someone who truly sees them. Technology can support the process, but it cannot replace human insight.

2. Students are more stressed than ever.

The pressure is real—and it’s constant. Academics, activities, expectations… It’s a lot. Many students are running hard without ever being asked how they’re actually doing.

3. High schools are working hard to guide students—but the landscape is changing quickly.

With so many evolving careers and pathways, students often need more individualized support than traditional systems can offer.

4. Parents are more anxious than ever.

And understandably so. The stakes feel high, the process feels unclear, and everyone wants to make the “right” choice. But anxiety can sometimes cloud what matters most.

5. Colleges are deferring more and building longer waitlists.

Admissions have become less predictable. A “yes,” “no,” or “maybe” doesn’t always reflect a student’s worth—it reflects a system that is evolving.

6. Many students aren’t taking the process as seriously as they should.

Not because they don’t care—but because they don’t always understand the long-term impact of their choices… or where to begin.

7. We don’t talk enough about happiness anymore.

Somewhere along the way, the conversation shifted from “Where will I thrive?” to “Where will I get in?”

Those are not the same question.

8. When students truly understand themselves, everything changes.

When they lean into their strengths, interests, and values—the path becomes clearer. Not easier, but more meaningful. And the options? They open up in ways they didn’t expect.

9. Many students don’t feel safe or certain about the world they’re stepping into.

That uncertainty shapes how they think about their future. They aren’t just choosing a college—they’re trying to find stability, purpose, and belonging.

10. And after all these years… I still love this work.

Because every student has a story. Every family has a journey. And being part of helping them choose wisely—in school, career, and life—still means everything to me.

In a world that feels louder, faster, and more uncertain than ever, students and families don’t need more information—they need clarity. They need a place to slow down, to ask better questions, and to feel confident in the decisions ahead.

That’s where we come in.

At Williams Educational Consultants, our work has never been about chasing rankings or checking boxes. It’s about helping students understand who they are, how they learn, and where they will be happy—not just for four years, but for life.

Because when a student feels seen, supported, and understood… everything changes.

And that’s why, 20+ years later, I still believe our work matters.
