February is a month of surprises and reflections—the unexpected six more weeks of winter (thanks to Punxsutawney Phil!), or the promise of new growth and discovery. Groundhog Day reminds us that the future can be uncertain, but we find moments of joy even in the unknown.

Walking through this shortened month, I find it surprising how many things we observe during February. Here is a quick reminder of essential observances:
Groundhog Day (February 2) – A fun tradition predicting the arrival of spring based on whether the groundhog sees its shadow.
National School Counseling (February 3-7)- an annual celebration in the United States that honors the vital role school counselors play in students' academic, career, social, and emotional development.
World Cancer Day (February 4) - a global event to raise awareness about cancer, reduce stigma, and promote cancer care and prevention worldwide.
National Wear Red Day (First Friday in February) – Raises awareness for heart disease in women.
Presidents' Day (Third Monday in February) – Honors U.S. presidents, especially George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
Valentine's Day (February 14) celebrates love, affection, and friendship.
National Random Acts of Kindness Week (February 11-17) – Encourages acts of kindness and goodwill.
Mardi Gras (Date varies, usually in February) – A celebration leading to Ash Wednesday, especially in New Orleans and other regions.
While I don't possess an exhaustive list of all observances, Black History Month stands out as one of the most important. During this celebration, we pay tribute to the outstanding contributions of individuals who have shaped our history and continue to drive change. It's a perfect opportunity to reflect, learn, and appreciate the significance of each person's story.
