School Highlight of the Week – Wesleyan School

The Wesleyan School is a K-12 Christian college preparatory school located in Norcross, Georgia. It sits on 85 acres in the Peachtree Corners area, with six main buildings, three chapels, two libraries and two dining halls. The school was founded in 1963 as part of the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. Although it comes from a Methodist background, students from all faiths are welcome. “Wesleyan’s mission is to be a Christian school of academic excellence by providing each student a diverse college preparatory education guided by Christian principals and beliefs; by challenging and nurturing the mind, body and spirit; and by developing responsible stewardship in our changing world.” (www.wesleyanschool.org).

Wesleyan is small, but full of activity. There are currently 1,136 students enrolled, with 449 of those in the high school. Students are admitted on the basis of academic testing, school records, interviews and teacher recommendations. Extracurricular activities are an important part of the application process for older applicants. Last year, the school offered nine mission trips to the students. There are eight honor societies; two student ran television stations, 15 Varsity sports, band, drama, arts and chorus. Students have numerous ways to get involved outside of the classroom and over 90% participate in the school’s athletic teams.

Class sizes are small, with a student to teacher ratio of 7 to 1 in the lower school, 9 to 1 in the middle school and 7 to 1 in the high school. There are 140 faculty members, of which 63% have advanced degrees. 22 Honors and 15 AP courses are offered in the high school and 95% of AP students scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam. Wesleyan also offers learning support to students in areas of math, reading, occupational therapy and speech.

There are several events for families that would like to learn more about The Wesleyan School. On Saturday, January 11th, there is a Family Open House at 1:00 p.m. Faculty members, student ambassadors, art groups, athletic teams and coaches will be available to answer questions and provide insight into aspects of Wesleyan life. Campus tours are also available October through February. An event that is coming up soon is the Prospective Parents Forum on Thursday, November 14th, 2013 at 10:00a.m. For more information on all visiting hours and events, click here.
