Mercer University is a private, co-ed institution with three campuses located in Macon, Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia. The largest and main campus in Macon covers 150 acres and has been recognized as “One of the Five Most Beautiful Campuses” in the United States. “Mercer was founded in 1833 and today remains committed to an educational environment that embraces intellectual and religious freedom while affirming values that arise from a Judeo-Christian understanding of the world.” (www.mercer.edu). Today, there are more than 8,300 students, 4,427 which are Undergraduates, enrolled in twelve schools and colleges.
The University’s mission is “to teach, to learn, to create, to discover, to inspire, to empower and to serve.” (www.mercer.edu). For the 13th consecutive year, they have ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. News and World Report’s annual ranking of the comprehensive universities in the South. They are also ranked number 7 in the South in the area of “Great Schools, Great Prices.” Undergraduate students can select from more than 60 majors among five schools and colleges, which are Liberal Arts, Business, Engineering, Education and Music.
On campus, students have many opportunities to get involved outside of the classroom. There are over 140 student organizations, club sports, intramural sports and fitness classes. Mercer is a NCAA Division 1 institution and competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference. They offer a number of student services including tutoring, placement services and also health services including counseling and psychological services. The student to faculty ratio is very low at 12:1 and 90% of the faculty members have earned Doctorates or the highest attainable degree in their field.
Mercer’s admissions counselors highly recommend taking a campus tour. In the Summer and Fall, tours are offered at the Macon campus Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. They are also offered on select Saturdays. Students can also get a great idea of what life is like as a Mercer college student through a program they offer called “Mercer Day and Night.” Students can stay overnight on campus with a freshman host, eat meals on campus, attend a class, take a tour and meet with admissions counselors. The application deadline for Mercer University is November 1st for Early Action and July 1st for Regular Decision. The acceptance rate is 82.8%. The average high school GPA is 3.65.
Tuition and fees are $32,466. 65% of students receive need-based financial aid.
