College Highlight of the Week – Berry College

Berry College is an independent, coeducational, liberal arts college with Christian values. It was founded in 1902 and has approximately 2,100 students. The college offers Undergraduate degrees in the sciences, humanities, arts, social sciences, business and teacher education. Berry College emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive and balanced education that unites a challenging academic program with opportunities for meaningful work experience, spiritual and moral growth, and significant service to others. College founder, Martha Berry expressed this as “Head, Heart and Mind.”

At Berry, founders believed in an educational program committed to high academic standards, values based on Christian principals, practical work experience and community service in a distinctive environment of natural beauty. The college is located next to Rome in northwest Georgia, about 70 miles northwest of Atlanta. Berry’s 27,000 acre campus is one of the worlds’ largest! It includes fields, forests, lakes and mountains. Students can hike 36 miles of trails, experience outdoor movies and horseback ride. There are more than 75 student organizations as well as intramural teams, leadership programs, academic clubs and many more for students to meet others and become involved outside of the classroom. The average freshman retention rate, which is an indicator of student satisfaction, is 77.2% The most popular majors at Berry are Business, Agriculture and Education and 60% of classes have fewer than 20 students. One really neat thing about the college is the College Work Experience Program, which is like no other! All full-time students are guaranteed on-campus jobs during fall and spring semesters. Most students choose to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

An important aspect of the Work Experience Program is that students first work in an entry level position and then have the opportunity to accept increasing responsibility and increasing pay. Many students ultimately end up serving as supervisors, trainers and mentors to other students. This is amazing training for a student’s future career.
